Frequently Asked Questions
Is this treatment for me?
A body lift is generally undertaken by people who have lost a large amount of weight, which has left them with loose skin around the thighs, buttocks, back and abdomen. This procedure enables the patient to remove excess skin in order to gain more normal body contours.
It is important that the surgery is performed when the patient is close to their ideal weight, as any future weight loss may loosen the tightened skin. A body lift is highly individualised and is performed only after close consultation with the surgeon to determine realistic goals and the best procedures.
What does the surgery involve?
Body lift surgery is performed through incisions that allow the surgeon to remove skin and tissue below the incision and to stretch the remaining skin and tissue more tightly over the body. Sometimes this is combined with liposuction. The scale of the surgery varies from individual to individual depending on requirements, but generally includes buttocks, thighs and tummy tuck.
What anaesthetic is required?
Body lift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic.
What is the recovery process?
Patients generally require a couple of days in hospital following surgery. Surgical drains remain in place for two to three weeks after surgery to drain fluid from the incisions. These are managed by the patient when they return home. During this period, swelling is common and compression garments are used to control this and to help smooth and flatten the skin.
How long does recovery usually take?
Patients are encouraged to walk the day after surgery, but a return to full normal activities can take up to six weeks.
Will there be any scarring?
Yes, but it is generally only a thin line that is positioned to lie in normal anatomic folds of the body. Layered suture techniques are used to minimize surface scaring.
